You know how when you create an online account these days, there's an image and you're supposed to type what you see? I finally got around to creating a Slashdot account and got the following message (twice!!):

You failed to confirm you are a human. Please double-check the image and make sure you typed in what it says.

Maybe I'm NOT a human (or not a very smart one).

Came across an interesting article about the current state of FLOSS (Free-Libre/Open Source Software) in terms of Federal government official procurement policies. (My view first: FLOSS should simply be subject to the same policies as any other type of software, not more and not less. What that means is that some FLOSS will "win" others will "lose" in exactly the same way as proprietary software does.)

Imagine: The federal government announces (or maybe it doesn't) that it will track what you are reading, listening to or viewing on the Web and then post it as a continuous stream of notifications on its web site.

[Pause for howls of anger and outrage...]
